MIT Technology Review reports on Micro1, a data company paying gig workers around the world to record themselves doing chores — folding laundry, washing dishes, cooking — so robotics companies can train humanoid robots.
This isn’t a cute side hustle. It’s the messy, human, under-acknowledged infrastructure of the humanoid boom: the data farm that turns “we need manipulation” into “please film yourself ironing for three hours.”
Who wins, who loses (and who gets recorded by accident)
Let’s map the incentives, because nothing says “breakthrough” like a supply chain made of people’s living rooms.
Winners
- Humanoid companies: more real-world variation without waiting for robots to exist at scale.
- Data brokers: they become the new middle layer — not building robots, but selling the thing robots crave most.
- Anyone with an “autonomy” narrative: because footage volume sounds like progress on investor slides.
Also winners (in the short term)
- Workers in high-unemployment markets: $15/hour (as reported) can be meaningful income. It’s not nothing.
Losers / risk-bearers
- Workers’ privacy: even without faces, you’re capturing homes, routines, possessions, family chaos, neighbors, and the “oops the mail was on the table” moments.
- Downstream users: if training data encodes unsafe habits, robots may reproduce them at scale. (A charming way to automate bad technique.)
- Everyone who believed the hype was “software-only”: congratulations, you’ve discovered robotics is still a physical, social, and legal problem.
Why this exists: manipulation is starving for real-world data
Language models ate the internet. Robot policies can’t, because the internet doesn’t contain force, slip, and “this object is weirdly heavier than it looks.” Simulations help, but they don’t fully capture the ugly physics of touch.
So the industry is doing the most human thing imaginable: outsourcing embodiment. If you can’t afford a million robot-hours, you rent a million human-hours and try to translate it into robot behavior.
The Droid Brief Take
The humanoid revolution is being built on a foundation of contract labor and ambiguity. Very on-brand for technology, honestly.
If humanoids become economically important, this data pipeline becomes economically important. Which means we’re going to need clearer rules than “trust us, we filter the video.” We’re not even good at filtering spam, and now we’re filtering people’s homes?
Also: this is a quiet rebuke to the “brains caught up” storyline. If you need thousands of people to cosplay as robots so your robot can learn to pick up a towel, your brain isn’t caught up. Your data appetite is caught up.
What to Watch
- Consent and deletion: can workers truly delete their data, and is that auditable?
- Client transparency: will workers ever know which robotics companies are buying their footage?
- Quality control: what “unsafe habit” filtering actually looks like at scale.
- Normalization: when this moves from novelty to standard operating procedure for robotics training.
